I've loved his novels too. I especially like the scottish dialect in some
of them. It is so interesting and fun to read. His insight into people is deep.
I was sorry when MALCOLM ended.
Yes, CS Lewis liked MacDonald. But, CS Lewis also loved and made beautiful Christian allegories and tales from Greek (and Norse?) mythology.
Lewis put the pure gospel (Savior's appearing, death, resurrection) in
THE LION, THE WITCH, THE WARDROBE.
Where is there any plain gospel like that in MacDonald ?
Gospel ala 1 Peter 3:18 or 2 Corinthians 5:21.
Seems like MacDonald really wants to approach God, but he wants to
come some other way. Did you read Lilith ??
If he doesn't want to claim to be christian, then fine.
Not all good writers have to be christian. But I think he makes that claim.

A complicated theology and gospel.
It is certainly not, however, the gospel of the Bible - the old or new testament,
not the gospel of Jesus Christ, not of Paul the Apostle.
Be very careful.

Thank you for publishing George MacDonald's thoughts about Job. I have read a few of his novels and wish I could find more of them to read. What a mind and spirit !
